The director of the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University Medical Center, Aaron Katz, M.D., has written the first book that takes a balanced look at using both conventional and alternative medicine in treating prostate disorders, in Dr. Katz’s Guide to Prostate Health: From Conventional to Holistic Therapies. The term, holistic, writes Katz, refers to treating the whole patient, not just the disease, Written in laymen’s terms, the book identifies, by brand name, the pharmaceutical drugs and herbs that hold the greatest promise to reverse prostate disease. Katz offers a comprehensive approach to prostate health that involves diet, exercise and stress management. He quotes Hippocrates who said, "Make your food your medicine and your medicine your food. The author asks, "What would Hippocrates say about pepperoni pizza? Cheese Doodles? Not only are they not good medicine—some of them aren’t really food. They have been so processed, so adulterated, that your body hardly knows what to do with them." His book is a call to action to patients to educate themselves and to serve as their own best advocates in the health care system. For example, he recommends various surgeries, such as cryosurgery, as viable prostrate treatment options for prostate cancer patients who are concerned about unpleasant post-operative complications such as impotence. Given that 90% of American men will have some sort of prostate deterioration by age 60, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, this book offers insightful information for not only men, but their loved ones. Best-selling medical authors Andrew Weil, M.D. and Mehmet Oz, M.D. have both endorsed this book. Dr. Katz’s Guide to Prostate Health provides a readable, valuable resource on the new technologies for early and proper diagnosis and gives practical advice on treatment options to reverse prostate disease.
